COMS (Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists)

COMS are certified through ACVREP (Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals).

Orientation and mobility instruction is a sequential process in which visually impaired individuals are taught to utilize their remaining senses to determine their position within their environment and to negotiate safe movement from one place to another. O&M specialists must complete the 2 year coursework through an accredited university and complete an internship under a certified COMS. They must apply and pass the COMS exam in order to receive their certification. More information can be found at: https://www.acvrep.org/
