ASL & Interpreting Services

Community ASL Classes

The SSD offers ASL classes for parents and the community throughout the year. Classes are structured to accommodate all levels of proficiency from beginner to advanced. For more information or to sign up for a class, please email Alla Tarasyuk, ASL Services Coordinator.

Level 1: Signing Naturally Units 1-2
Students focus on how to convey basic information about themselves, interact in culturally appropriate ways with others, and develop receptive skills as a foundation for ASL.

Level 2: Signing Naturally Units 3-4
Students learn how to convey information related to situations and. how to denote aspects of time and location.

Level 3: Signing Naturally Units 5-6
Students work on describing immediate and extended family as well as daily routines, and incorporating fingerspelling and numbers in various settings. Students learn the basic structure of storytelling in ASL.

Level 4: Signing Units Naturally Units 7-9
Students enhance their sign vocabulary and grammatical syntax by giving directions, describing others, making requests and more.

Level 5: Signing Naturally Units 9-12
Students practice sign vocabulary related to workplaces, personal qualities, routines and more. 


Interpreting Services

Louisiana's Special School District provides both administrative and classroom interpreting services. 

All American Sign Language Interpreters on staff are nationally certified through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and are required to obtain a Superior rating on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI).  SSD interpreters are also required to obtain an Ancillary Certificate through the Louisiana Department of Education. SSD interpreters adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf code of professional conduct (CPC). SSD interpreters work in a wide variety of settings campus wide including, staff meetings, professional development, sporting events, department meetings, tours, and special events.
